Liberating the Bird: Sarah Elizabeth Charles Sings the Poetry of Maya Angelou

Rising vocalist/composer Sarah Elizabeth Charles, noted for her "soulfully articulate vocal style, a mix of strong projection and subtle detail" by the New York Times, leads this premiere repertoire dedicated to and inspired by the works of the late poet and legacy, Dr. Maya Angelou. This fresh take on Angelou's body of work will pay tribute to Angelou's poetry, activism, and immeasurable role in American history.

As the active vocalist in a number of bands, Sarah Elizabeth Charles has performed at venues including The White House, Gillette Stadium as a National Anthem singer for the New England Patriots, the Bern International Jazz Festival, the Port-au-Prince International Jazz Festival, The Kennedy Center, Blue Note NYC, Le Poisson Rouge, Dizzy’s Club Coca-Cola and the Rose Theatre with Jazz at Lincoln Center. In addition to her performances, Sarah is also an active educator, working as a teaching artist with Carnegie Hall’s Musical Connections program and developing an early childhood music education program with Rise2Shine, a non-profit organization based in Fond Parisien, Haiti.
