Louis Armstrong, the revolutionary and highly influential trumpet player, is one of the most recognizable icons of jazz. Throughout his life he had profound musical connections with pianists who impacted his playing and career development.
Trumpeter Alphonso Horne and pianist Chris Pattishall re-animate Armstrong's legacy from a unique perspective: the pianists who performed with and influenced the legendary trumpeter. From his second wife Lil' Hardin to Earl “Fatha” Hines, Jelly Roll Morton, Fats Waller, Duke Ellington, Clarence Williams, and Dave Brubeck, this program presents a broad range of Armstrong's career through the lens of these relationships.

About Alphonso Horne: Trumpeter Alphonso Horne is a two-time Grammy nominated trumpeter named by Wynton Marsalis as one of the rising stars of the next generation. Horne has performed with many renowned jazz artists including Wynton Marsalis, Marcus Roberts, Michael Feinstein, and Rihanna. Horne has won many including awards the National Trumpet Competition and in the Aug, 2011 issue of JET Magazine, world-renowned trumpeter, Wynton Marsalis included Horne in a list of 16 young jazz musicians entitled, “Wynton’s Picks: Who’s Got Next.”
About Chris Pattishall: Recently named by Wynton Marsalis as one of the top five jazz musicians under 30 to watch, Chris Pattishall is quickly generating a powerful presence in the jazz world. He has appeared with Wynton Marsalis, Jon Hendricks, Jimmy Heath, Donald Byrd, George Coleman, Billy Hart, Jamey Aebersold, Wycliffe Gordon, Fred Wesley, Steve Wilson, Steve Nelson, and others. Pattishall has toured internationally as a leader and sideman, presenting original music as well as inventive readings of a broad range of jazz repertoire. Recent programs have presented distinctive interpretations of the music of Nat “King” Cole, Fletcher Henderson, and Mary Lou Williams. Active as both a pianist and composer, Chris holds an ASCAP Young Jazz Composer’s Award, and participated in the Kennedy Center's Betty Carter Jazz Ahead Program and the Ravinia Festival Stean’s Young Artist Program.
