Brianna Meets Nina

  • Last Chance Antiques & Cheese Cafe 6009 Main Street Tannersville, NY, 12485 United States (map)

The accomplished and accoladed Brianna Thomas delivers this dazzling premiere revamp of the iconic works of legendary ’60s songstress and 2018 inductee into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Nina Simone and the “Queen of Gospel” Mahalia Jackson. Simone and Jackson individually crafted worlds of sound in gospels, spirituals, jazz, soul and pop that were inspired by, and honored, the philosophy of Dr. King.

Thomas expertly laces together these uplifting narratives on songs ranging from the passionate and fearless I Wish I Knew How It Would Feel to Be Freeand Feelin’ Good to the celebratory tribute Why? (The King of Love is Dead), written by her bass player Gene Taylor in reaction to the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Admission: $20

About Brianna Thomas:
Brianna’s singing is deeply enriched by an understanding of the masterful voices of jazz past. Beyond a healthy serving of sass, Sarah Vaughn’s influence contributes to Brianna’s style the artistic savvy needed to communicate myriad moods and feelings as well as a keen instrumental perspective. Add to that a coyness reminiscent of Nancy Wilson, an Ella-esque skill and enthusiasm for scatting, and the stylistic breadth and vocal grandeur evocative of Dianne Reeves. Read more
