Mathis Picard takes 23Arts back through the years of pianistic ancestry to understand and celebrate the journey of the world’s great piano styles, the Harlem Stride Piano. From the neighboring country and beyond the ocean, Ancestral Stride looks back at the historical roots and significance of the piano, witnessing the changes the instrument has made to our cultural, social, and economical worlds since its beginning.
Mathis has shared the international stage with artists such as Patti Smith, Wynton Marsalis, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Jason Moran, Sonny Emory, Bria Skonberg, DJ Kindness, Yaron Herman. Since graduating Juilliard, multicultural artist Mathis Picard has used his French-Malagasy roots to bring his brand of dance music to the jazz scene. Mathis lived in four different countries before putting down roots in New York City, where he can be found playing with his band, Mathis & Sound Orchestre.
