Songbook Watch Party: CAROLINA SHOUT

  • Live Stream (tune in from home!) (map)

Created and hosted by “trumpeter of abundant poise” (NYT) Dominick Farinacci, Songbook Watch Party is a weekly interactive experience bringing artists and audiences together in an intimate setting for conversation & music.

CJF is excited to co-present an upcoming watch party dedicated to James P. Johnson’s quintessential masterpiece of stride piano, Carolina Shout.

In Johnson’s time, piano cutting contests were proving grounds—most often in Harlem apartments—where competing pianists could strut their stuff. For this premiere collaboration, four top pianists of today will test their hands in a modern-day channeling of the classic cutting contests — Ethan Iverson , Aaron Diehl , Sullivan Fortner , and Mathis Picard.

Audiences will have the chance to talk with and get to know each artist, and then enjoy a feature performance created especially for Songbook Watch Party.

Tuning in is EASY and FREE - Just click the button below to subscribe. You will receive an email from Songbook Watch Party with instructions on how to join the live stream from the comfort of your home.

For audience members — Download the free Zoom App HERE or in your app store

Songbook Watch Party Check-List
(for optimum enjoyment)

  • Make sure you have a solid internet connection.

  • Minimize other online activity during the session to decrease lag.

  • You can access via mobile, but laptop/desktop is preferred for optimal experience.

  • If possible, grab a pair of good headphones.

  • Think about what you’d like to ask the artists – we love hearing from you! You can check some info on me and our guest artist Christian Tamburr below.

  • Part of the cool thing about Zoom is that you can join using your video…so we get to see each other! HOWEVER, you also have the option to keep your video off and still watch, so only your name appears.

First Time Using Zoom? Here Are a Few Tips

  • If on your laptop/desktop: when you click the link below, it may open your web browser and ask to re-direct to your app. Make sure you select OK, as the program works much better through the app.

  • Once you join, you have the option of viewing either gallery view or speaker view. If you’re on your mobile, you can swipe left to toggle between views.

  • There are two ways to ask a question: either type your question in the comment section or click ‘raise hand’ to be identified, and then speak your question. On laptops/desktops, simply click “participants,” and you’ll see the ‘raise hand’ button pop up on the right side. On most mobile devices, the ‘raise hand’ option would be on the main screen.
